How to teach any dog to FETCH!
By
This is one in a series of dog training tutorials that I have made. Clicker training is demonstrated in this video – but not fully explained. See my video on MOTIVATION for a more detailed explanation of using clickers and treats in training. For an ALTERNATE approach to teaching your dog to hold objects, check out this video: www.youtube.com If you have questions about anything related to this video, let me know in the comments section and I will reply as soon as I can. Remember to subscribe to my channel if you want to see more videos like this that I upload weekly. Thank you for watching and have a nice day.

@tgoth99 For a few minutes each day. So long as you quit while your dog is still interested in the game and before they get bored of it, you should be ok!

Dear Tab, i have a labrador puupy that is natural at playing fetch. He gets the ball and brings it back most of the time, but will not let go of it. We almost never play tug of war with him so i know he got the behavior from somewhere else(hes a shelter
dog). My question is how do you get him to drop it?

@teknokat81 Yes, and it works well with many dogs. As an alternative, I have a slightly different method in my video on “Holding Objects” which is just as effective.

tab289, If I would like to train my dog to pickup things I drop on the floor and hand them to me, would this be the same technique I would use?

@brockpfeif . Thanks! yes i’ve tried it today, and like its a big attention getter than just using the voice. Its a big reminder that the behavior is good and should be rewarded. I like it! lol thanks!

@daryl152 From my own experience as a fairly novice trainer, I really love the clicker. It’s so much easier to “capture” the behavior, and timing can be harder with a verbal bridge instead of the clicker. Good luck!

This tutorial was just what I needed! Like the previous poster, my girl is so food motivated that she wasn’t interested in the ball…I did just as you suggested in the video, getting really excited and moving the ball all around the floor, she did finally grab the ball, I clicked and treated, and we had a “lightbulb” moment! Your technique is great, and really does work! Thanks so much!

Awesome! Does this clicker training work well? Or can u just praise by just giving food and petting? I’m going to try this since I have a clicker anyways! wish me luck! and thanks for the vid bro! hope it works for me!

@tab289 I tried your tip today and watched the video and she’ll hold onto it, but then immediately drop it. I can’t get her to hold onto the toy longer so I can hold the treat in front of her nose to drop it. Thanks for your help.

@tab289 Thanks, I’ll try your tip today,

@supernateification I would try to teach her that to get a treat she has to interact with the ball. You can click her at first for just looking at the ball until she understands the concept. I go over this more in my video on holding objects.

Tab289,
I can’t get my 7 yr. old dog to be interested in the ball, she only cares about the food she knows I have. She knows that the clicker means a treat, but she won’t do anything to get a treat. Please help!
